Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze depression levels and influencing factors in older adults from households of different income levels. In particular, this study was conducted by dividing the households into low-income and ordinary-income households. This is because previous studies have identified differences in income levels among older adults as factors that increase the incidence of mental illness, such as depression, which has led to the need for a discriminatory approach to organizing programs to prevent and manage depression. 1,428 ordinary-income households and 2,257 low-income households were sampled using the data used in the Korea Welfare Panel Study (11-13th waves). Data were analyzed with generalized estimating equation. Our analysis found that there were differences in the factors of depression between low-income households and ordinary-income households. Second, low-income households as compared to ordinary-income ones were at higher risk of suffering depression. Third, the quality of life has been identified as the most important indicator of old-age depression. Based on the above findings, the need and policy implications of an integrated management program were presented, taking into account the types and characteristics of households.
